American prisoner legally allowed to send sperm to his wife by mail

The American court of appeal allowed a prisoner to mail his sperm to his wife so that she could get pregnant with the help of external fertilization. The court cancelled the decision of a lower court which denied William Gerber (who is serving lifetime imprisonment) in his request to become father “by mail”. The jury decided that imprisonment did not deprive the prisoner of his rights to become a father and the judge said that “the Constitution gave a right to prisoners for fertilization by mail”.

Gerber was convicted in 1997 for armed raids and drug crimes. He is not allowed to see his wife, Reuters informed. Gerber repeatedly claimed that he and his 46-year old wife were longing for having a child and the mail was the only possible variant for them to become parents.
