The Pope to get a throne made of weapons

Artists from Mozambique have designed an unusual throne which is to be made of details of weaponry which will never be used. The throne will be then presented to the Pope.

A RIA Novosti correspondent informs, making of the throne is dedicated to the 10th anniversary of signing the peace agreements between the Mozambique government and the RENAMO opposition movement in Rome on October 1, 1992. The agreements put an end to a long civil war in the African republic. The designers of the throne are members of the Maputu Art Society have been working on the project within the network of the campaign aimed at transforming armament and weapons into peace instruments (something like forging spades out of swords). The campaign has been carried out by the Christian Council of Mozambique since 1995. Within the period since the campaign was launched, the local population have handed in over 270,000 items of weaponry in exchange for agricultural instruments, construction materials, tractors and sewing machines.
