George Michael gets caught on drugs before wedding his boyfriend

George Michael was arrested in the early hours of Sunday morning over alleged drugs offences after being found slumped over the steering wheel of his car in London 's West End. A singer who is 42 was arrested on suspicion of possessing Class C drugs, including cannabis and GHB, a recreational substance popular with clubbers, and has been released on bail. According to the police reports, there was found a stash of pornographic material, sex toys and sex masks in the boot of his car. George Michael

This is not Michael's first public brush with the law. In 1998, he was arrested in Los Angeles for lewd conduct after indecently exposing himself to an undercover police officer in a public toilet. The incident prompted him to admit he was gay, ending years of speculation about his sexuality, says.

Michael, who has admitted to using cannabis to combat depression in the past, was also arrested for being unfit to drive despite reports that the results of his breath test were negative. But he was de-arrested for that offence after being examined by a duty doctor.

In an interview with The Independent in December, Michael described how he sunk into depression in the early 1990s following the death of his partner, the Brazilian dress-designer Anselmo Feleppa, which was closely followed by that of his mother. He admitted to using both cannabis and ecstasy at the time in an attempt to take the edge off of his grief and added: "It got to a point where I was smoking 25 joints a day." The singer's management were unable to comment on the arrest last night.

It is not known how long he was kept at the station, but the singer was released on bail yesterday. Michael, who has a home in Hampstead, north London, and was due to marry his partner, the Texan sportswear salesman Kenny Gloss, early this year, will have to report back to the police station next month, says.

"Following an examination by the duty doctor in the custody suite he was de-arrested for the driving offence. He has been released on bail to return to a central London police station on a date in late March pending analysis of the substances recovered,” police officials said.

In December last year he released a new documentary charting the highs and lows of his turbulent career.

Michael has sold more than 85 million records worldwide and notched up six No 1 singles in the US , 11 in the UK and seen seven albums hit the top spot, according to

As half of the pop group Wham! with his school friend Andrew Ridgeley, Michael had a series of decade-defining hits in the 1980s, with songs like Wake Me Up Before You Go Go, Freedom and I’m Your Man. In 1988, he released Faith, his first solo album, to acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic.

A protracted legal tussle with his record label, Sony, prevented Michael from making music for much of the 1990s, an argument that was resolved when Virgin and Steven Spielberg’s production company, Dreamworks, paid Sony $40 million to release him from his deal, Times Online reports.
